Población y desarrollo en México: una síntesis de la experiencia reciente

Abstract

The main features of the recent economic and demographic history of Mexico are briefly reviewed. The paper attempts to assess that experience, taking first the record of the development pattern that prevailed between 1940 and 1970, and considering the ways it both accomodated and sustained the rapid population growth that took place during the period. Next the paper turns to the exhaustion of this pattern of accomodation that became evident from the late 1960's onwards, and examines the responses to those difficulties, among them the change in population policy. The paper then takes up the implementation of that policy and the determinants of the fertility decline that took place afterwards, and closes with a brief review of the implications that demographic considerations have for Mexico's future.
