Abstract

This essay is confined within the thematic boundaries of the relationship between urban development and cultural change. Regarding the urban development the analysis is based on census data concerning the economic structure growth and diversification of the state of Queretaro and the municipality of the same name. In such data the industrialization stand out as the principal factor -starting in 1960- and as a consequence of it, the growth of the services sector which has stimulated the increasing and concentration of people of the middle class (according to their job status) into the urban agglomeration of Queretaro City. In regard to the cultural change the analysis is based on direct data -obtained by means of a limited survey made in 1992- which shows changes in the life style of a portion of its urban middle class inhabitants. Such changes concern to the quality of their habitat and to their perception of the city.
