The use of contraceptives has broadened in Mexico over the last few years. This process has been recorded in various surveys of national scope, which also indicate changes in use patterns, in the institutions which supply contraceptives, in the age structure of users, etc. The National Demographic Survey (NDS) indicates the most recent patterns, outstanding among which is the increase in female sterilization. This paper is based on NDS data and describes some of the characteristics of the distribution of this method among different social groups, the institutions involved and the special nature of their respective "clientèles", the timeliness of the accomplishment and the magnitude of the increase.
