Focus and Scope
Estudios Demográficos y Urbanos is an open access scientific journal, specialized in the analysis, research and reflection on demographic, urban and environmental dynamics in Latin America and the world, with a particular focus on Mexico. Its perspective is inscribed in the field of social sciences, favoring an interdisciplinary approach.
The journal is aimed at a specialized audience and all manuscripts submitted are subject to a double-blind peer review process, ensuring rigor and academic quality in its publications.
Since its creation in 1986, Estudios Demográficos y Urbanos has established itself as a reference in its field, offering a space for academic discussion through the following sections:
- Research articles: original works that contribute to theoretical, methodological and empirical knowledge on demographic, urban and environmental issues.
- Descriptive findings: brief and careful presentations, without theoretical integration or extensive literature reviews, of novel and specific empirical results.
- Review papers: papers that synthesize a large body of literature on specific topics of relevant issues in demography and urban and environmental studies.
- Reflections: brief contributions that critically evaluate various aspects of the content published in the journal. They may also focus on current or relevant findings, data, theories, tools, methods or publications in demographic and urban-environmental research.
- Interviews: conversations with prestigious specialists in demography, urban planning and environment whose contributions are relevant to the academic community.
- Bibliographic reviews: critical evaluations of new publications related to the journal’s fields of interest.
- Reports: synthesis of the results of activities of the scientific community (congresses, seminars, forums, among others) related to the topics of the journal.
- Special issues: a set of selected articles that address in depth a specific topic of current relevance in the areas covered by the journal
The journal is published in Spanish and English. Its publication is continuous and is disseminated in open access electronic format, in PDF, HTML, audio, Kindle and Epub formats, guaranteeing a wide availability of its contents.
Estudios Demográficos y Urbanos is edited by the Centro de Estudios Demográficos, Urbanos y Ambientales(CEDUA) of El Colegio de México, A.C., and has an outstanding presence in directories, indexes and academic repositories, including ESCI-WoS, Scopus, Scielo México, Redalyc, Latindex, Google Scholar, JSTOR, Sociological Abstracts, IBSS, CLASE, HLAS, HAPI, DOAJ, Popline, Population Index on the Web, SocINDEX with Full Text, Biblat, CAPES, Ebsco Host, Informe Académico (Gale), Open Access Digital and Library y Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries.
Since its foundation, the journal has been directed by renowned specialists: Martha Schteingart (1986-1990), Crescencio Ruiz (1990-1991), Beatriz Figueroa (1991-1999), José Luis Lezama (1999-2001), Clara Salazar (2001-2003 and 2021-July 2024), Manuel Ángel Castillo (2004-2021) and Jéssica Nájera (August-December 2024). Since January 2025, Víctor M. García Guerrero is the Editor-in-Chief.
The journal’s predecessor is Demografía y Economía (1967-1984). Its historical collection also includes the entire collection of this predecessor publication.
