Abstract

The Gompertz-Makeham mathematical function has received an increasing amount of attention from several researches, because of its ability to describe demographic phenomena and its flexibility in projecting tendencies in such phenomena. Yet, unlike other kinds of functions, it has not been used very frequently for different practical applications.

The main aim of this article is to examine the application of this function in detail, and more specifically, its mathematical formulation and development. Another objective is to test an iterative method for obtaining parameters, by which one may obtain an optimal function best describing the behavior of a population in the face of demographic phenomena.

This study was conducted with population growth and with structures by age of fertility and the labor force. The findings indicate the versatility and usefulness of the Gompertz-Makeham function as a working tool, bearing in mind at all times the demographic hypotheses and assumptions involved.
