Code of Ethics
A. Obligations of the Editorial Committee and Director of the Journal
- The Editorial Committee and the director of the journal will consider the possible publication of an article based on its academic and scientific merits, and not for personal or ideological reasons.
- The director of the journal will make a summary review of the article to ensure that its topic is linked to the areas of specialization of Estudios Demográficos y Urbanos, and that the text complies with the journal’s editorial norms, including correct drafting (see the section Norms for Publication).
- The director of the journal has the responsibility for accepting or rejecting a text, based on the results of the corresponding anonymous judgments.
- The director of the journal will select the persons suitable for reviewing the article. In this task, he will be assisted by the Editorial Committee.
- The acceptance of each collaboration will depend on a review by at least two reviewers specializing in the topic, who will remain anonymous, as will the author(s), for this purpose. At least one of the reviewers will not belong to the editorial institution. In the event that one review is negative and the other positive, the director of the journal will submit the text to a third review.
- The director of the journal will send the articles produced by researchers from the CEDUA to be reviewed by specialists external to the Center.
- The director of the journal and the Editorial Committee will settle cases of conflict or exception, such as redundancy, duplicated publications, plagiarism, falsification of information, conflict of interest or problems recognizing authorship, among others.
- The director of the journal will be responsible for the absolute confidentiality of the assessment process.
- In the event that the director of the journal proposes the publication of an article of which he/she is the author, it will be channeled to anonymous assessment through the Editorial Committee.
- The director of the journal will inform the authors of the final decision of the assessment of their proposal, in writing and accompanied by the corresponding review.
B. Obligations of the authors
- Articles must be unpublished and must not have been simultaneously submitted to any other editorial process.
- Authors must comply with the publication guidelines that appear in the last pages of the journal and on its website.
- All texts must be written correctly to ensure their legibility.
- Authors must clearly present the results of their research and its importance.
- Articles must demonstrate honesty in the handling of their information, that is, it must not be manipulated. Interpretations and conclusions will be supported by the results.
- The author must always acknowledge the contribution of his/her collaborators and the other authors who participated in producing the article.
- The author will indicate in the article who financed his/her research and what role they played (this can be at the foot of the page).
- The author has the responsibility to preserve the dignity and privacy of the participants and persons surveyed in his/her research.
- The author will refer to other groups and individuals with respect and avoid using sexist terms or any other derogatory language.
- The author will always mention the sources of his/her information and explicitly recognize the contribution of other works and ideas, even if these are not textual. To this end, he/she will attribute correctly, clearly and punctually the authorship of texts and ideas, using quotes and bibliographical references (see Publication Guidelines Section).
- The author must express clearly his/her ideas on the work, and in the event of reproducing textual quotes from a document that he/she has written, he/she must proceed as with any other quote. The author must avoid making an excessive use of self-references, as this will affect the review of his article.
- Where necessary, the author must indicate in the article that the information, revisions or conclusions have already been published in another article, in a presentation, conference, thesis or on Internet, and will explain the nature of the previous dissemination.
- The author must avoid being redundant (known as “self-plagiarism”). This occurs when he/she presents several works to scientific publications with minimal variations, or uses significant portions of previous works in the new one.
- The author will accept his article being submitted to a review process by the double-blind system. In other words, the author does not know who is reviewing him/her and the reviewer does not know the identity of the author.
- The author will submit his/her new version with the corrections suggested by the reviewers, within the time frame specified by the director of the journal. If more time is needed, he/she must request an extension from the director.
- The author(s) of the texts accepted for publication in the journal will cede his/her/their ownership rights, to enable the texts to be published and distributed in both print and electronic format. The author(s) will maintain their moral rights and the possibility of distributing these articles free of charge for academic or scientific purposes.
- If the author(s) wish to disseminate an article published in the journal in another media, such as a book chapter or a translation, he/she/they must submit a written request for authorization to the director of the journal.
C. Reviewers’ Obligations
- All reviewers have the obligation to judge the texts objectively, based on their contribution. The reviewer must justify his/her opinion on the basis of his/her knowledge of the topic, and not for personal or ideological reasons.
- The reviewer will judge in written form, in formats established for this purpose, the pertinence of the work in accordance with the nature of the journal and the scientific validity of the texts, based on its internal coherence, originality, contribution to advancing research and the appropriate, updated use of specialized bibliography.
- The reviewer must explain clearly his/her judgment, to enable the director of the journal and author to understand his/her comments regarding the scientific value of the work and his/her suggestions to improve it.
- A reviewer who does not consider himself/herself qualified to judge a work must inform the director of the journal of this within ten days. Moreover, he/she must report any circumstance (such as personal, academic, political or financial) that could influence his/her decision.
- The reviewer will maintain absolute confidentiality throughout the entire assessment process.
- Whenever he detects these, the reviewer is obliged to report to the director of the journal all cases of conflict, such as redundancy, duplicated publications, plagiarism, falsification of information, conflict of interest or problems recognizing authorship, among others.
- The reviewer must treat the text being reviewed as a confidential document and may not use information, arguments or interpretations contained in it for his/her own benefit, or circulate it to third persons.
- The reviewer must review the text within a maximum of thirty days. If he/she requires more time, he/she must inform the director of the journal, who will decide whether to grant this or assign the text to another reviewer.
